Malachi Ellis is a Black Gay Film and Television Producer based in Toronto. He focuses on narrative projects that showcase diverse identities and how one can find themselves through ordinary and extraordinary circumstances. Malachi strives to tell stories that revolutionize the status quo for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ audiences.
In 2023, he was selected for the prestigious Canadian Film Centre's Norman Jewison Film Program’s Producer Lab. His producing skills have led him to work with some of the top Canadian production companies, such as Entertainment One/Hasbro, Bell Media, marblemedia, Insight Productions and Lark Productions.
As an independent producer, Malachi has worked with some of Canada's most talented emerging writers/directors, producing short films and proof-of-concept works. His most recent producing credits include I LIVE HERE (2022), DIASPORA (2022), FISH BOY (2023), EXPRESS (2023) and THE BEST (2023). His slate of short film projects has screened globally at Oscar, BAFTA, and Canadian Screen Award festivals such as Aspen ShortsFest, BFI Flare, HollyShorts, Indy Shorts, Urbanworld, Hamburg Shortfilm Festival. He has been showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Short Cuts Program for three consecutive years. His work has been featured on online platforms such as Vimeo Staff Picks, Short of the Week, Super Channel and CBC Gem.
In 2021, Malachi was named one of Playback Magazine's 10 to Watch. He also participated in Kidscreen’s The Next Wave: Diverse Voices program, where he received mentorship from Creative Executive, Cort Lane. Malachi is an alumnus of Toronto Metropolitan University's RTA Media Production, the OYA Emerging Filmmakers Program, Reelworld Screen Institute's Producer Program and Reelworld / Amazon MGM’s Line Producer Training Lab.
